How much water to store, and what to store it in
The one-gallon-per-person-per-day rule gets repeated everywhere. It is a reasonable floor and a poor plan.
Almost every preparedness checklist opens with the same line: store one gallon of water per person per day. The number comes from guidance that assumes a temperate climate, moderate activity, and drinking plus minimal hygiene. It is a sensible baseline. The trouble is that people treat it as a target rather than a minimum, store exactly three gallons per person, and consider the problem solved.
What the gallon assumes
That figure is roughly half for drinking and half for everything else. "Everything else" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. It covers washing hands, brushing teeth, cleaning a wound, rinsing a pot. It does not cover a shower, laundry, or flushing a toilet, and it does not cover a pet.
Two adjustments matter more than the rest:
- Heat and exertion. In genuine heat, or if you are doing physical work, drinking requirements rise substantially. A gallon a day total becomes optimistic quickly.
- Anyone with elevated needs. Someone who is pregnant, nursing, ill, or recovering will need more, and this is exactly the circumstance in which running short is worst.
A more useful way to think about it: budget one gallon per person per day for drinking and basic hygiene, then add whatever your household actually consumes for the things the gallon does not cover. For most people that means storing somewhere between one and a half and two gallons per person per day if space permits.
How many days
Three days is the standard advice for short disruptions. Two weeks is the figure that comes up repeatedly in guidance for regions prone to longer outages — winter storms, earthquakes, anywhere where the road might not be clear for a while.
The honest answer is that it depends entirely on where you live, and the limiting factor is almost never money. Water is cheap. The limiting factor is floor space and weight. A two-week supply for a family of four at one and a half gallons per person per day is 84 gallons — roughly 700 pounds, and about as much volume as a large chest freezer.
Weight is the constraint people underestimate. Water is about 8.3 pounds per gallon. Before you plan a large stored volume, think about what floor it will sit on and whether you can move it.

The practical answer for most households is a mix: some bottled water because it needs no thought, several mid-size jugs because they can actually be carried to another room or a car, and a drum only if you have a garage floor and a real reason.
Storage conditions matter more than rotation
Water does not expire. What degrades is the container and, if contamination got in, what grows inside it. This is why storage conditions do most of the work:
- Keep it dark. Light drives algae growth in translucent containers. A cardboard box over the jugs is sufficient.
- Keep it cool and stable. Heat cycling ages plastic faster than anything else. An uninsulated attic is the worst common choice.
- Keep it off concrete. Conventional advice, mostly about temperature transfer and chemical migration. A pallet or a sheet of plywood costs nothing.
- Keep it away from solvents. Fuel, paint, and pesticide vapours can permeate plastic. Do not store water next to them in a garage.
On rotation: commercially sealed bottled water carries a best-by date and is fine to replace on that schedule. Water you bottled yourself in clean food-grade containers is commonly rotated every six to twelve months — less because the water goes bad than because rotating forces you to inspect the containers, which is the part that actually matters.
Storage is only half of it
Stored water is a fixed quantity that runs out. The ability to treat water is what extends the plan, and it takes up almost no space by comparison — a filter, or plain unscented household bleach, or the ability to boil.
That is a longer subject and deserves its own piece. The short version: if you have budgeted for two weeks of stored water and nothing else, you have bought yourself two weeks. If you have one week stored and a way to treat what comes out of a tap, a stream, or a water heater, you have bought yourself considerably more.

- Weight, not cost, is what limits how much you store.
- Mix container sizes so some of it is portable.
- Dark, cool, off the floor, away from fuel. That beats obsessive rotation.
- Storage plus treatment beats storage alone at the same cost.
