Choosing a headlamp without falling for the lumen number

The big number on the box is a peak the lamp holds for about thirty seconds. Nearly everything that determines whether you like the light is printed somewhere else.

Headlamps are sold on a single figure. One model claims 400 lumens, the one beside it claims 600, and the 600 costs eight dollars more, so the decision seems obvious. It usually isn't. Peak lumen output is measured in the first moments after switch-on, before the lamp heats up and steps itself down to a level it can sustain. On a small lamp with nowhere to dump heat, the drop can be severe and it can happen fast.

This is not fraud — the number is real, briefly — but it describes a condition you will almost never be using the lamp in.

Read the runtime chart, not the headline

Better manufacturers publish a runtime graph or a table of modes with output and duration for each. That is the document worth reading. What you are looking for is the output the lamp sustains on its middle setting, and for how long.

A useful comparison: a lamp advertising 600 lumens that settles to 90 for four hours is a worse tool than one advertising 300 that holds 150 for six. The second lamp is dimmer on paper and better in the dark.

Watch for how runtime is defined. Some brands stop the clock when output falls to ten percent of initial — a threshold at which the lamp is barely useful. "Eight hours of runtime" can mean one usable hour followed by seven of dim orange glow.

Beam shape decides how it feels to use

Two lamps of identical output can be completely different tools depending on how the light is distributed.

If you only do one kind of task, buy for that. If you do not know yet, a flood-biased lamp with some throw is the safer default — most headlamp use turns out to be close work, and people consistently overestimate how often they need distance.

For daily and recreational use, built-in rechargeable is more convenient and cheaper to run. For a lamp that sits in a drawer for two years against the possibility of an outage, replaceable cells with lithium primaries are the stronger choice, precisely because they will still work when you finally reach for them.

Hybrid models that accept either are a genuinely good answer and worth the small premium.

The details that decide whether you keep using it

Mode order

Some lamps start on maximum every time. In the dark, at close range, that means being blinded on every switch-on and then cycling through modes to get back down. A lamp that starts on low, or remembers the mode you last used, is far more pleasant to live with.

A real red mode

Red light preserves dark adaptation and does not carry as far. Useful for moving around at night without resetting your night vision or waking someone. The thing to check is whether red is reachable directly, or only after cycling through white — a lamp that flashes you with white on the way to red has defeated the purpose.

Lock-out

A lamp that switches itself on inside a bag arrives dead. Any lamp intended for storage or packing should have a lock-out — a button hold, or a mechanical twist.

Weight and balance

Under about three ounces, a headlamp disappears. Above roughly five, you notice it on your forehead within the hour. Rear-mounted battery packs balance better at higher weights but add bulk.

Water rating

IPX4 covers splashes and rain and is adequate for most people. IPX7 covers temporary immersion and matters if there is any chance of the lamp going into water — around boats, in a creek, in genuinely heavy weather.

What we would actually tell a friend

Set a budget, then ignore the peak lumen figure entirely. Find the lamp in your range with a published runtime chart, a sustained middle output around 100 to 200 lumens, a flood-capable beam, direct access to red, a lock-out, and a weight under about four ounces. There will usually be two or three candidates and they will all be fine.

Then buy a second cheap one. The most common headlamp failure is not having it with you.
